The i.MX21 is the first applications processor with a built-in, low power enhanced multimedia accelerator (eMMA) hardware block, which consists of an MPEG-4 and H.263 encoder/decoder and image pre-processing and post-processing stages. These features provide exceptional image and video quality. The video processing modules save power by offloading the ARM926EJ-S™ core. The i.MX21 also helps to ensure that a mobile device can run multiple applications simultaneously without affecting performance. For example, a user can watch a video and send an email to a colleague commenting on the video while the video plays with no degradation in quality.
Smart LCD Interface
Designed for optimal battery performance, the i.MX21 enables smart LCD displays, in addition to standard LCDs. Smart LCDs save battery life and help eliminate the need for users to recharge their devices constantly.
Enhanced 3D Graphics
Today’s video games are created with lifelike 3D images that would have blown your mind just a few years ago. The i.MX21 helps you design mobile devices that deliver awesome video imagery. High performance graphics support starts with a solid rendering engine based on the ARM926EJ-S core and the i.MX21 microprocessor’s L1 cache. The i.MX21 elevates overall system performance through a bus master interface that reduces the overhead to external multimedia coprocessors. It can also support advanced graphics software standard APIs such as Mobile Java™ 3D and OpenGL-ES, as well as 3D software engines such as HI Corp., Superscape® and Fathammer™. The graphics interface can also support 2D software graphics operations including lineDraw, bitBLT and FillRect.
MULTIMEDIA
Smartphones, PDAs, digital cameras and other mobile devices that connect to PC peripherals such as printers or MP3 players become even more flexible when they can connect directly with each other. The possibilities for these devices grow exponentially: a digital camera could transmit data directly to a printer for quick printing of photos; a mobile phone and PDA could share information directly, anywhere their owners choose to connect them.
USB On-The-Go
The USB On-The-Go standard defines a way for mobile devices to connect directly with other peripherals, taking the PC out of the connectivity loop. The i.MX21 applications processor is designed to make that connectivity easier with USB-OTG technology. In addition to providing connectivity on the go, in smartphones, this feature gives the host direct control over the smartphone modem for debug or production programming. The i.MX21 is among the first applications processor designed to provide a dedicated OTG port for an external OTG transceiver. That can translate into a noticeable savings compared to using an external module.
Security Means Code and Data Protection
The i.MX21 addresses consumers’ concerns about m-commerce; carriers’ concerns about unauthorized software, configuration protection and theft of services; and content providers’ concerns regarding digital rights management. The i.MX21 includes a security framework comprising both hardware and software elements that enable the fundamental cryptographic operations required for a wide range of security services and applications. Specific security system elements enabled in the i.MX21 include support for trusted computing, secure internal and encrypted data storage, a hash accelerator and memory management. These cryptographic operations employed in the i.MX21 lay the foundation that supports a full spectrum of security services and applications including low-value transactions, the protection of embedded technology and other assets, and secure high-value transactions required by enterprises worldwide.
