AUSTIN, Texas – Aug. 14, 2012– Freescale Semiconductor (NYSE: FSL) is expanding its Kinetis K series 32-bit microcontroller line (built on the ARM® Cortex™-M4 processor) with wafer-level chip-scale package (WLCSP) options. Thesenew Kinetis devices are designed to maximize board space and enhance performance with minimum-length interconnections, allowing the miniaturization of applications. The MCUs are ideal for industrial, consumer and medical applications with critical space constraints.
WLCSP refers to the technology of packaging an integrated circuit at the wafer level, rather than the traditional process of assembling individual units in packages after dicing them from the wafer. WLCSP is a true chip-scale packaging (CSP) technology since the resulting package is the same size as the die. The key advantages of a WLCSP are minimized die to PCB inductance, reduced package size and enhanced thermal conduction characteristics.
The new Kinetis K20 and K60 100 MHz MCUs contain 512 KB of flash memory in a 120 WLCSP 5x5 mm package with a 0.4 mm pitch. These devices feature the processing efficiency of the Cortex-M4 core with the flexible low-power operation, high-precision analog, Ethernet, CAN
and, USB connectivity and rich user interface peripherals, such as the low-power hardware, touch sensor interface, cryptography and integrity modules, and secure digital host controller.
Kinetis K series microcontrollers are included in the Freescale Energy Efficient Solutions program,
which highlights selected products that excel in effective implementation of energy-efficient technologies and/or help deliver market-leading performance in the application spaces they are designed to address.
Tools and software
The families in the Kinetis K series are fully - supported by a broad selection of easy-to-use 32-bit tools, including an enablement package consisting of Freescale´s MQX RTOS and software solutions, CodeWarrior tool suite for Microcontrollers featuring Processor Expert software,
and a complimentary USB stack, as well as a range of third-party support.
Availability and pricing
Prototype quantities of 100 MHz Kinetis K60 120-pin WLCSP devices are available now through Freescale and its distribution partners. Broad market availability is planned for late Q3, with suggested resale pricing starting at $ 6.96 USD in 10,000-unit quantities. For more
