High Performance with the Coolest Possibilities—MC9S08QD MCU for Automotive and Industrial

The MC9S08QD (QD) microcontrollers expand the low-end capabilities of Freescale 8-bit portfolio for automotive and industrial markets. They offer enhanced functionality and flexibility while maintaining pin compatibility with the KA2, EL/SG, and QG8 families.

The QD2 and QD4 MCUs incorporate a high-performance 4-channel, 10-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC), which makes them an ideal solution for industrial applications such as DC cooling fans, low power supplies and telecommunications equipment, and automotive applications such as mirror dimming and actuators. The QD is also well suited for:

  • Digital capacitive discharge ignition systems for motorbikes and motorcycles
  • Sensors and meters
  • HVAC dampeners
  • Push-button control
  • Watchdogs
  • Portable air coolers
  • Small appliances
  • Large appliances
  • Camera zoom control
  • Chargers
  • Treadmills
  • Vacuum cleaners

The QD S08 controllers are at the lowest end of the Freescale portfolio, but still offer more flash memory and RAM than other 8-bit microcontrollers in the same price range. QD boasts two 16-bit on-chip timers, one 2-channel timer and another one-channel timer. Each channel can be used for input capture, output compare, buffered edge-aligned pulse-width modulator (PWM) or buffered center-aligned PWM.

MC9S08QD4 and MC9S08QD2 Features

  • 16 MHz HCS08 central processing unit
  • HC08 instruction set with added background (BGND) instruction
  • 4 or 2KB flash
  • 256 B RAM
  • Flash read/program/erase over full operating voltage and temperature
  • 4-channel, 10-bit ADC
  • Dual 16-bit on-chip timers
  • Internal clock oscillator with 2 percent deviation over temperature and voltage
  • Single-wire background debug interface
  • On-chip in-circuit emulation with real-time bus capture
  • 8-pin PDIP and 8-pin narrow body SOIC packaging

The QD microcontrollers are a cost-effective, highly integrated solution with 2.7–5.5V power consumption for cost-conscious applications that require economical performance in a small 8-pin footprint. Order samples and development tools today directly from Freescale:
